The Curious Case of How to Make Froebel Ribbon Star Ornaments
For well over a year I wanted to try creating these beautiful ribbon star ornaments that I had seen on Studio Carta’s instagram in 2020. This past holiday season, I finally committed to giving them a try, & I have to say — they were so fun to create!
I found myself idly making them while watching Netflix over the course of a few evenings - what can I say? I love a good craft + binge Netflix night. To be honest, the hardest part of this whole craft was having to decide the ribbon colors ;) They were such cheerful additions to our Christmas tree, & I could definitely see them being a fun way to make a garland (next time!).
I watched a wonderful tutorial by @apprenticestudio that was so helpful in learning how to create them! I have also seen these stars referred to as Nordic stars, origami Froebel stars, German stars, & Scandinavian stars, & from what I can tell they are traditionally created using long paper strips, but I love them reimagined using ribbon. Here is an interesting blog post I found while researching them that explains their origins a bit (if you are like me & like to know far too much on all the things!).
I think the best part about this craft is that you don’t need many supplies to actually make them. All it takes is a large eye darning needle, loose weave cotton ribbon (I used this ribbon from the beautiful Studio Carta Shop), thread to tie a loop for hanging on a tree or to use as a gift topper (this part is actually optional, but I used this gold thread), scissors, & a ruler.
I found after trying my hand at the first three colors as solid stars that I actually loved the color combos more in the end! Next year I’ll have to order at least four different colors of ribbon so I can give a four color combo option a try :)
